  2. I don't know that much about genetics, sorry! All I know if that if you see some interesting looking specimens with nice coloration, isolate them and breed them with similar looking individuals if you can, and just keep selectively breeding through generations until they are breeding true and giving you the coloration that you want.

  3. That's a good point, the food could very well spoil while you're gone. But carrot doesn't seem to spoil very quickly to me, if anything it just kind of dries out on the outside and withers up. If it was humid there is a higher risk of mold I would assume. With my lobster roaches they eat the food so fast it kind of doesn't have a chance to mold. I do think they need something for moisture, such as fruit or vegetables. But water crystals would work along with dry food. To answer you're question, yes I think they need some form of food and water while you're gone depending on how long you're away.

  4. So do you guys think they need fed while your gone? I have been away twice now for over a week and each time I have fed them the normal dry fair ( oats, catfood) before leaving. Perhaps even throw in some leaves. I also turn off the heating elements, water the humid species and leave water crystals for the dry species. I have had no issues other than an aborted ooth or two. I think leaving any fresh food items risks a mess. It's kind of like fish. People try to rig up feeding things and it usually fouls the water. I feed my roaches every 2-3 days so I guess I think they can handle a week.

  5. Just thought I'd announce my blog, due to the lack of insect-keeping sites for certain groups. No non-imaginary roaches featured yet, but they are on my to-find list. Also, there are a few help requests (would it be okay to @ a few forum experts?)

  6. 166 females and 34 males transitioned into a new breeding colony. The current set up should house about 1000 breeders comfortably (at the same population density as my previous colony). On a side note, heating pads under plastic tubs can cause the plastic to become brittle and the bottoms can catastrophically fail when you move them.
