  1. When I get roaches I plan on having clean up crews (CUC), partly because I love isopods etc and partly because they make cleaning so much easier (my snail and slug enclosures stay very clean due to CUC). One thing I'm confused about though is whether the CUC will eat roach poop? Because if I use eco earth and have a bunch of springtails and isopods in the substrate that would make it difficult to throw out the substrate without throwing out the CUC... I've heard though that roach poop isn't good to breathe in so I would want to make sure they're kept clean.
  2. Oh so the people I'm seeing that use critter keepers must have the non climbing species, I didn't think of that! I have one of those gasket bins from target that I'm going to use, but then I was thinking for other smaller colonies/for display roaches that critter keepers might be good since they come in smaller sizes and are a good shape and have ventilation already installed. Like maybe for discoid which don't climb. But it might just be easier to use bins (I've hear the lids on critter keepers aren't as easy to remove) if I can find some that are of similar shape/size to critter keepers. Yeah re netting I've been told that fine nylon mesh fabric is good for preventing nymph escapes so I suppose even for climbing species I could use that over the top of critter keepers with the lid placed over it. Or I might do the same with a fish tank. I'm not really sure yet. I've heard of the petroleum jelly but then I realized that even if that does work really well (I wasn't sure if it did) I'd still have the problem of other insects getting into the roach enclosures if I didn't use mesh netting over the top. Like fruit flies etc would become a problem (we get fruit fly problems a lot).
  3. I know people use Critter Keepers for roaches so I was considering it for my future roaches, but how do you stop the nymphs from escaping through the holes in the lid? Netting over the top?
  4. Awww...I didn't realize Florida had such strict roach laws That means most of the most fun pet species aren't allowed
  5. Thanks! I hadn't found those sites yet. I'll add them to my list. I see they actually have a "Florida Legal" section so that's really useful When it comes to, say, Madagascar hissing roaches I assume it'll be legal to buy them from someone in Florida. either online or local?
  6. Does anyone else here have a problem with this bin having a strong smell to it? I bought the bin for my snails but I noticed before I used it that when the lid is on it has a strong smell. When the lid is off it's fine. I decided to use it for future roaches instead and cut a hole like pictured in the first post. I'm hoping with that ventilation it won't smell.
