As the question says. Is there anything that effects dubias gender? I used to always have extra males now I am very low on males. I have only 8.3% males to females that's WAY lower then the 20% + males I need. I'm talking a group of over 600 females with only 50 males. That's numbers from 3-4 different bins. It's like 12 females per male, It used to be were I had 100-200 extra males. Does anyone have ideas on why this would happen if something climate or food wise would change the genders they give birth to? If its not that would there be a reason for this? I need to get more males but I'd like to know why not just buy more and say o well.

Thank you guys. I wasn't really interested in some roaches for the same reason thinking they may take over, but after some reading is seems like a lot of the ones i looked up aren't that bad. Most of them need a leaky pipe, heat, food, ect. a lot of stuff that just makes them not interested in really living in a house. I've actually seen someone say how really roaches are good and kind of just tell you something is wrong if they do infest your home. I know that's not the case for all roaches tho. I also am a lot more leary of some getting away then others.

Ok thank you. I was thinking that maybe the case the other one I came up with was smoky brown cockroach (Periplante fuliginose) when I as looking but had no idea if either was right. The red runners they were mix with came from Arizona. So far they seem to be doing fine with the red runners just on egg crates with a little box of most soil so I'm guessing I can keep them like that and just try to split them up in 2 containers. Never had any interest in the American roaches but there here now lol. Is there any possibility that the 2 could cross breed or if I split them up will I still have all my lateralis to keep breeding?

Odd the image stopped working. I have a new picture of one now that it's larger. It's between 1.25" and 1.50" or around 3-3.6cm. Their very fast and climb like its nothing so I'm a little afraid of trying to go looking for a possible winged male. Here's a picture of one next to one of my lateralis females. It looks brighter red like in the 1st picture. The other pictures turned out dark but show the size difference and body shape a little more.

I was sorting these and saw a few that looked a little different. I didn't think much of it till I saw they started climbing up the walls of the plastic containers. Not all of them could climb just the ones that looked like the picture. They climbed very quickly and easily up 3 different containers. One of the containers was the 32oz clear plastic soup container. They're a little flater and wider then the ones I know are lateralis nypmes.

Can anyone help me ID this little one?

So I was doing a little more reading on sexing them and came across some posts talking about sexing nymphs by the last segment of there body like Hisserdude showed in this post. I looked through my set and seems if its true that you can sex dubia like this to I only got 2-3 females in the set :/ Guess if that's the case the person I got them from tried only giving me males. I wouldn't be to surprised if they did. This set (large nymphs) was just not the greatest experience. My 1st set (from a different person) was great ordered 250(tiny nymphs) got over 300 and only 1 died. This set it seemed like 1 or 2 were dying off every day for the 1st week, still have a few dying off here or there but die off did slow down.

Thank you guys. I I know with some they all look very alike so with such a difference I just wanted to make sure. I'm guessing that is because there more a feeder species then a pet so they don't breed only a specific pattern? It looks like I have 20 males and no females yet. I was thinking that was a nymph look but my bf fond something online saying different and I didn't want to believe I still have no females with so many male. I fond a nice picture of a female now. Is it normal to get so many males with no females? I started with 60 large nymphs have 20 male, 0 female.

Some of my dubia molted in to adults and some of them are making me question if there all really dubia. #1 seems to have a mask on the back of its head #2 and 4 have a few dos but mostly black #3 is all black #5 has a large light brown spot #6 looks more like a lvory and again has more of a design on it. also #7-10 are in fact adult females right?

I was looking (at roachcrossing) to get some more roaches pets and/or feeders and would like some options on a few. Differences, similarities, Housing, Size, Speed of growth, activity level, personality, difficulty/easy of keeping, stuff like that. Blaberus fusca Says it's a nice feeder and I think they look cool. Think all of these look cool. Blaberus colosseus "Peru/Ecuador" Says there easy to care for and shy but ok to handle Blabrus atropos "Florida" Again says good feeder but not much more info. Then for more of a pet roach I was looking at this list. Could they still be used as feeders if they end up breeding to much? I'm guessing they would just be better to try rehousing if the over populate. Gyna centurio Lucihormetica verrucosa Neostylopyga rhhombifolia Archimandrite tesselata I also was thinking about setting up a 55 gallon roach tank and wanted to know what maybe a few good types that may stay out in the open to watch. If theirs a few types I could mix to watch in it. Thinking it would look nice to have a few fake trees in it. Something more decorative.

I think for now I'll still keep 3 separate containers. 2 for 2 different breeders and one with a few feeders so I dont have to bug my main 2 containers as much. 1st set I started with around 300 very small nymphs, a hand full which are now pushing 1inch 2nd set I'm getting is a mix of 1inch to sub adults(dont know if you use that term with roaches). That way if one of them seems weaker then the other or I have a problem with one I still hopefully have a healthy container. Then my little shoe box of around 20-30 nymphs for feeding off, as to not bug the main colonies much. Not sure if I really have to worry about that or not. I just read you can stress them out if you bug them to much. Either way I still like the shoe box as it makes it easier to pick a few out be it for holding or feeding. Thank you. Being as there entertaining for us but also a food source for my other pets it shouldn't be to hard to cull the colony but knowing me I'll end up liking the odd balls and have to set a new home up for them to live as just pets. I guess in a few months I may get to see some of those little differences myself. My 1st set is from New Mexico, My 2nd set is from California and I've really been thinking of getting a set from Texas and locally. So I may like going over bored. Start with 1 type and want as many different colonies as I can get as well as wanting to go out and get about 10 different kinds(B.fusca, T.petivriana and/or T.regularis, G.centurio, N.rhombifolia, A.tesselata to name a few.) Maybe should ask about some options on some of them later. Interesting. I really would have thought it would have affected them in some way like over years and years make them weaker or smaller/big as they get the trait over and over from the family. I know with fish it doesn't really work like mammals but after some time if you breed a family they do seem to get weaker(possibly shorter life or birth defects) as well as making and undesirable traits more pronounced. I really do want healthy happy roaches not just roaches that live long/breed fast enough to use as a food source for my Ts.

How would this cat food be for my roaches? I'm also feeding them these dry foods mixed up: Y.S. ORGANIC BEE FARMS Bee Pollen, Millville whole grain Honey Nut Crispy Oats, Simply Nature organic Oats & Honey granola, And Cobalt tropical flakes As well as these fresh: tangerines, carrots, collard greens and kale How does all that sound would you add or take anything out? I was thinking of buying some chicken and or bunny food to mix in but not sure so haven't yet. I should add there both pets and feeders for tarantulas. Thank you

I was reading/watching a little about breeding roaches and that you sometimes needed to add new blood or they start dying off. I can fully understand that being true but leaves me with a few questions. 1: How often should you add new blood? 2: Is it best to go with males, female or just random babies to mix in? 3: If I were to get a group of 100 now (from the same place) and split them in two different breeding bins if I were to mix them down the road would that be like adding new blood or would they still be to closely related? Also can someone tell me or point me to a post telling me how many roaches I could have in what size tube/How maybe egg crates for how many roaches? Mainly talking about feeder dubia atm, but i also want to get some B.fusca and other pets/feeders.
