This is touching. I never heard of Halloween Hissers. The only hisser I had were Madagascans (3). The girl would hiss every time I touched her. The first boy I had only a day or so. His replacement I could pick up and pet and he never hissed at me. Takana, Naoshi, and Monocco. When I lived with Germans one would crawl up like the back of my leg and it tickled. When I sat in the bathroom, I would watch 2 or 3 of them go around my foot like they were playing hide and go seek with each other. One I kept in a jar for 7 months got used to her home and seemed happy with the food and water puff I provided. A friend at Cornell babysat her for 2 months and thought the same I did about her being content. Not so when I first caught her. Then she was slippery and ran as they normally would, but I persisted. After a month or so she calmed down. I accidently broke her middle left leg when putting her back in the jar after changing her food. It made me feel bad seeing her limping. Plus she lost her back left leg sometime before that. Her name was Tutti. Amazing creatures no matter what species.

Yes nutrition could be the answer. Tropical fish flakes are a good thing to feed them. A pet shop boy recommended them for crickets and my Discoid roaches and Germans did well with them also.

Sorry I don't know. The only kind I've kept in recent years are German and there were too many to monitor activity like that. Best of luck with your survivors.

Well thanks. Anyway, those sound self-made. But someone here on the forum new of some escape-proof containers that Walmart sells. Plastic I believe. Unfortunately, it was many months ago and don't remember who. Maybe at was Razias but he lives in France I'm pretty sure. Hopefully, the person will see this.

I have German. You think the holes would be tiny enough for the nymphs not to get through?

A few months ago, someone on the forum mentioned some crates they have at Walmart that would be better for housing the roaches than tanks. Can anyone think of what these would be?

They are really pretty especially the one on your finger. What's is meant by cultivating?

Correct. That's one reason roaches are so appealing to me is that at least with the common species, they aren't bloodthirsty like spiders. Of course, I'm not a scientist. Just a sentimental insect/animal lover.

As far as I can see, roaches aren't hunters. I believe as with rodents, roaches eat other insects when no other food is available or just when they encounter them randomly. They are primarily scavengers.

Can those 5 liter shoe boxes keep Germans in that you know?

sorry to hear about your first colony. I've had that happen first with Madagascans. Couldn't get them to eat and had trouble keeping them warm. Then several times I tried keeping crickets and each time they all died even though I tried to give them a good amount of water plus provided soil for their eggs. Though insects can be the least demanding of pets, they can be the most tricky to care for since so little knowledge/help is available.

Congradulations! By the way, I've read somewhere that cucumber peel is a roach repellent. Do you peel it first before giving it to them?

We will see. There is a local girl who took two of the older ones Sunday. I'll see how many she wants from the second litter once they're old enough. There's about 12 in the batch. Oh, and thanks for the offer.

That's true, but I've asked every person imaginable for over a month. Plus pet shops are pretty full of them and would probably use them for feeders or sell them to people who would. If I can find a humane, legal way to ship them would you want one?

Well, I'm not sure but the pet shop I got them from gets them from Ohio somehow. I probably wouldn't charge. My pay is knowing they would be well cared for. How many would you want?

This topic is somewhat unrelated to roaches, but I have a real problem that I know you'll all understand. I have two pet mice who I was told were both girls. But they had two litters of babies. My vet obviously can't tell the difference or the second litter wouldn't have come. Anyway, I need to find good homes for several of them. Please no feeders!! They're to precious for that. Let's see. I have two gray and one brown up for adoption now. The second litter will be old enough in about 2 weeks. The second are really dazzeling with multicolors. So are any of you interested in having one as a pet? Or anyone else you know? Again, no feeders. Thank you.

Any animal needs water. I give my roaches Fluker's Cricket Quencher gell. It doesn't dehydrate nearly as fast as when wetting cotton balls or whatever. Also safer for them than a water dish.

I've been feeding my Germans tropical fish flakes. A pet shop boy recommended them for crickets that they had all the nutrition they need. Since crickets and roaches are similar, I've fed the flakes not only to the Germans but also to Discoid and they've both done well with them. This time, I picked up Gold fish flakes by mistake. They should have similar nutrients shouldn't they?

I also prefer roaches way over bees for their gentle nature as you do. I love all species whether indigenous or exotic. Their color varieties and wavy antennae are another factor. Sounds like you really care about them and I'm impressed. I hope they live long for you as well.

The one at the top is beautiful. Tiger Hisser correct? The 2nd and 3rd I'm sure are Madagascans. The fourth is cute with the orange, like a dog putting its paws up. The 5th and 6th are Deaths Head, right?
