I like the nymphs better than the adults They look like prehistoric trilobites.

Are you sure that they need leaf litter? I have raised several colonies of isopods (backyard isopods ) with no leaf litter and they did just fine. They did have some moss though... By the way, where can you get kelp sheets at?

Citrus fruits like oranges are fine, but I wouldn't feed them lemon or lime. Some other fruits that my cockroaches will eat are: plantains, carambola, kiwi (didn't eat a lot of it), coconut, apple (Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, etc.) What color are the mangoes when you feed them to your cockroaches? Mine never seem to care for mango.

Why the color is so different?
Blattodea313 replied to Chinese insect fans's topic in Popular Cockroach
The second photo is Archimandrita tesselata. The first photo is Blaberus giganteus. Be careful when you are looking at roaches on google since the picture could be one species, while the species you are looking for is mentioned on the website the photo is from. -
Perhaps the light gets too hot? Insects will usually go underground when an environment is too hot for them. How hot is the enclosure?

I would keep a damp paper towel in the enclosure instead of water crystals. I have been using water crystals for a long time, but like you I have never seen them actually drink/eat them. I have, however, witnessed them drinking off of a damp paper towel. I had an adult the other day that kept falling on his back over and over. I finally moved him back into his old enclosure that has a less "loose" substrate. I think it is the coco fibre because it is very loose and they can't get a grip on it to turn them self over. Thats just my guess. Oh, by the way I think you are the one who made the 55 gallon display cage? Did the adults run around frantically when you moved them into the enclosure?

Here is a link to the size comparison between the small male and average male. https://www.dropbox....4u/IMG_0602.JPG I'm not sure that this one is the smallest, but he is smaller than the average one. I also got some pictures of my colony eating banana. It appears the females enjoy the banana a lot more than the males Females: https://www.dropbox....ez/IMG_0603.JPG Males: https://www.dropbox....ak/IMG_0604.JPG

Well even in the large batch of nymphs that grew fast, there were still some that were still tiny when the others where much larger. I believe the ones that are tiny are still little when they reach adulthood since I have a few adult males that are around one or two inches shorter than the average males. I'll have to see if I can catch one of the little ones later today, so I can make a size comparison photo.

Periplaneta australasiae

I love the red coloration of these Will they infest like the Periplaneta americana? I'm assuming they can climb? -
I got around 5 inches of snow here in NC It has been like 4 years since I got to see any.

My first generation nymphs were the ones who took around 3-4 months to reach maturity. I have had a few more generations after that, but they don't molt nearly as fast as the first generation. I think it might have to do with two of the three months being warm (July and June). Right now the colony is not reproducing because I had to separate the males and females, as they were nearly overcrowding their enclosure.

Windward, would this be a good beginning textbook? http://www.amazon.com/The-Insects-An-Outline-Entomology/dp/1444330365/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392168474&sr=8-1&keywords=entomology+textbook -

Not sure why they grew so fast but they had a mound of dry food at all times in their enclosure, and I fed them with fruits/vegetables every day. Heat was around 74-75 F.

What are the little pellets in the food bowl? -
Do they bite each others wings? In the last picture it appears that his wings are nibbled on.

Baby Diploptera punctata color?
Blattodea313 replied to Nicolas Rousseaux's topic in General Blattodea Discussions
The 1st instar have red/orange heads. It is normal. -
Interesting idea, but the cockroaches would probably get on the walkway, and the people would step on them. Or, the cockroaches would just hide in the logs and no one would ever see them. They had an exhibit at one zoo where you could put your head up through a bubble thing in the middle of the enclosure and see the cockroaches. It's not the same effect though.

Thanks The males like to fight over the wood piece in the left corner.

I couldn't figure out how to actually post the picture, so here is a link to the enclosure: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oa0jqgo7ftpbb3t/IMG_0580.JPG This picture is of the setup before I put the roaches in it. The roaches don't seem to bother the plants, so everything looks the same now as in the image.
