  1. It depends on how big the enclosure is. I have an 18x18x24 terrarium for mine, and as long as I do all the maintenance before 8pm they do not seem very active. After that, they're flying all over the enclosure.
  2. I have tried it before...it only works depending on what fruit you give them. Apricots can be peeled in half to get to the moisturized part, while bananas are like cement and they do not bother with them. As long as it isn't cement hard then they should like it. Another thing I would watch is how much you give them. A lot of times, dehydrated fruit has a TON of sugar in it. Overall, I find it is MUCH easier to just give them fresh fruit for several reasons: 1. Cheaper 2. Roaches like it better 3. You probably like fresh fruit better too so you can eat the part that you do not put in the roach enclosure
  3. How many hissers do you have in it currently? How long have you had this setup? If I were you I wouldn't let it get too crowded. I have tried natural setups for hissers several times to no success. My problem was that the hissers would stack on top of each other and smash the plants, which killed the plants. Also, make sure they are well fed as my hissers started to eat up the ivy I had in with them. Another thing I found is that if you keep fresh green oak leaves in with them, they tend to go after the laves rather than the plants. The most success I have ever had with hissers and live plants is to just keep a few males (like 15) in the enclosure. One of the tricks that I found out is that if you build up the substrate to around 4 inches, you can dig a hole and place the plants in it still in the pot. That way, if the plants die, you can just quickly replace it with another by lifting it out of the enclosure. Maybe it will turn out different for you. Perhaps mine were just bulldozers
  4. Your setup looks cool. Do you mind posting a picture of it?
  5. I have noticed a great deal of variation with different shades of brown, but never pink or purple colors.
  6. I do the same thing too and I my roaches have never had any problems with it. I've heard multiple times that bacteria from outside is good for them.
  7. Anyone know why they are called lobster roaches?
  8. They look so much like trilobites. If only they stayed like that. I guess they are more attractive as adults though.
  9. Its interesting to see how two different species coming from very different regions interact.
  10. I have another combo to add to that list that I have tried: Hemiblabera tenebricosa + Gyna lurida.
  11. Do Panchlora nivea behave like Gyna lurida any?
  12. Wow, they look about the size of hissers. I have to say they are a lot more attractive than some hissers.
  13. Cool, I like how you offer prices for individuals. Like if you wanted to order just five males or 3 females or something like that. The only thing I noticed was that on your homepage it says to see the contact tab for any questions, but there is not a contact tab.
  14. Looks like a Gromphadorhina portentosa x Gromphadorhina grandidieri???
  15. While E. chopardi may look nice, they will probably outgrow the enclosure very quickly. I would say an even smaller species like Gyna spp. or the little kenyan roaches would be better. You could try getting just all one gender of a hisser species (preferably male). 4-5 male tiger hissers or dwarf hissers would look nice in a 2.5 gallon natural setup. I'm considering doing this myself, but with a much large enclosure.
  16. What is the best way to clean up cockroach frass inside the enclosure? I'm thinking springtails but I don't know if they will do the job. I have a coconut husk bedding but it doesn't seem to keep down the odor from the cockroach feces.
  17. I live very close to the mountain region. I have a rock quarry (or what used to be a rock quarry) across from my house, and I find those plants there all the time. I read online that they are a pest plant and highly invasive, but there actually quite pretty when they turn all red.
  18. Ok, that looks just like the plants I see around my house. It must be a staghorn sumac. Thanks!
  19. Wow! Beautiful pictures. Do you know what the tall plant in the right corner of the 4th picture is? I've seen it in the woods behind my house but I don't know what it is. It must be an invasive species if it is in both North Carolina and the Philippines.
  20. What is the best clean up crew for cleaning up the cockroach feces? I've tried isopods, but they don't seem to work very well.
  21. The coloring sort of looks like Rhyparobia, but I'm no expert.
