  1. Here is a link to another one of my vivariums (I did this one today): https://www.dropbox.com/s/i4szw2cxu7pou3y/2014-04-08%2017.35.37.jpg Now I just have to wait for the plants to grow before I put any animals in it. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should put in it (doesn't have to be cockroaches)? I'm thinking about Panchlora sp. "giant".
  2. You could get a few of the cheap little fans that they sell on amazon. They might keep the enclosure cool depending on how big it is.
  3. They aren't bad as long as the nymphs can't climb. If the nymphs can climb, then it can be disastrous (I speak from experience ).
  4. Interesting, do you have any females in the enclosure with them, or is it an all male enclosure?
  5. I mainly combined the two species to give the vivarium a ecosystem/rainforest feeling to it. I also have isopods and springtails in the vivarium. The reason I combined these two species specifically was just a random pick, and the H. tenebricosa were cheap
  6. 1.The two species of hissers (A. insignis and E. javanica) cannot create hybrids. 2.The care is the same for hissers (they just look different). 3.I am not sure if the nymphs would be able to escape. I would use some vaseline to keep them from climbing up there anyway (better safe than sorry). Both nymphs and adults can climb, although the nymphs do climb much better. 4.I don't ever do anything to the wood and leaf litter that I get from outside. Some small organisms from outdoors can help the roaches. To be extra safe you could just carry out your plan mentioned above, though. 5.I have minimal experience with millipedes, so I can't really help you with your last question.
  7. Yes, sometimes when the hissers climb up on the background they like to chew on the plant with the disk shaped leaves. I haven't noticed it lately though. I would get tall plants since the roaches can't eat on them as easily as ground cover plants. It also helps to get light bulbs that help plants grow. That way, the plants can more easily grow back what got eaten off. I haven't had any mold problems yet. I have had some problems with grain mites in the G. lurida setup though.
  8. The male G. portentosa are in a two 24x18x12 terrariums. The G. lurida are in an 18x18x24, and the hermit crab setup is a 24x18x18.
  9. I have at least five G. portentosa males that look like your E. javanica. I'm not sure if they are adults or not either. The spikes on their legs are relatively weak too, compared to my other adult males that are the "right" size.
  10. I actually got most of the terrariums when they were on sale at the various pet stores. The other supplies were expensive though
  11. Here are some links to my naturalistic terrariums: 1.) 12. Yeah, I wouldn't put the two species together in a terrarium of that size. If you added some cork flats or wood pieces then you could probably put the hissers in there. I don't think that the hissers would eat the dubia nymphs though. You can always try it though. Keep an extra 10 gallon already setup so that you can separate them if needed.
  13. When you said that you could add more vertical height, did you mean that you would get the 24in. terrarium? I believe the terrarium is the zoo med brand? I would probably get the larger terrarium before you combine the two species.
  14. If the heat were off what would the temperature be (your room temperature)?
  15. I don't keep the heat on at night for them because in the wild there are nightly drops in temperature. It really depends on the species though.
  16. I suspect that one male starts a fight with another then they end up bumping into another male that then gets involved and so on. Basically what you said. I do observe the males that are kept together (no females) tend to get into fights more often than the ones that are with females.
  17. A strainer could work if the holes were big enough. Depends on how big the substrate is though (for the mealworms not the roaches).
  18. I have a tank with all male hissers too, and I've noticed this as well. I think it might just be a territorial behavior, or it might have something to do with having just all males together.
  19. He looks more like Whooper. Here are some pictures of him: http://www.google.co...er.png;1080;950. I see why you think he looks like Chansey though.
  20. I like the black wing a lot better than the regular. It makes it more Halloween like.
  21. Have you actually found any right now during the winter? I haven't found a single insect every since winter came around.
  22. Thanks for the replies. I put some isopods in the enclosure. I'll have to get some springtails.
  23. I like the nymphs better because of their coloration. The yellow and the brown go good together.
  24. What are some of the best ways to get rid of grain mites? The tank that they are in is a planted vivarium, so I'm not really wanting to tear the whole thing up. Would adding isopods help? I have the dry food for the G. lurida in the tank in a flat food dish. Thanks in advance.
