  1. It almost seems like more people have sent in contributions since the contest "closed" than when it was open. So, I'm going to open the calendar submission thread back up for a day or two. Please, everyone who emailed me photos, create posts at the calendar thread link below with titles and species names of your photos and I'll drop the photos in for you (or feel free to post the photos yourselves, if you're able to). http://www.roachforum.com/index.php?showtopic=3578
  2. Email it to me, please peter "at" bugsincyberspace.com We were a few photos short, but we had a few people contribute at the last minute. It's all just for fun, so send it along. Thanks!
  3. Hopefully we can get two more photos to complete the calendar. I will take two more photos later today if nobody else wants to slide into the 11th and 12th spots.
  4. Arenivaga sp. Barkin' Texas Male http://x.co/bshk
  5. Easily one of the most informative and behaviorally rich roach videos I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing, Kyle! The hobby needs lots more like this. I feel sorry for all those tarantula dealers out there as people start to realize where the action's at!
  6. Yeah, post some new ones or go ahead and take a photo of the same species as a breeding pair, or a colony shot, a different background, etc. etc. Really nice to see a turnout of members for the calendar, today! Even if somebody has no intention of buying a calendar (they will be available for sale at cost of production only), it's still fun to put something together as a community.
  7. Email them to me and I'll post them peter "at" bugsincyberspace.com
  8. I wrote a short reply to your similar questions in the calendar/Announcements section. Thanks Nanchantress!
  9. Ghost males have eight segments and females have six. These are viewed from the underside of the abdomen, beginning just past the point where the hind pair of legs attach to the thorax. It is easier to distinguish nymphs of this species by looking for the longer, twistier "horn" on the males' heads. Females, young and old, have a shorter, stouter horn. Lots of dud oothecae in this species, in my experience, even when fertilization seems guaranteed.
  10. You are welcome to email me the photo (peter at bugsincyberspace.com), but I'd encourage you to look for a "resize" option rather than a "crop" option in your software. Don't worry too much about the DPI at this point. This is a number that can fluctuate based on the size you choose for your photo. Thanks for kicking our contest off! Deadline is a week from today (Dec. 20th deadline).
  11. It is helpful if you keep the files size down on the photos. I pay like 80 bucks a month to have mantidforum hosted. Currently roachforum is pretty safe since we have fewer members, but it still has a monthly charge and its share of challenges. Keeping the file size at a reasonable level helps save me money. I'll up the photo bandwidth for members since it doesn't appear that the forum is about to explode with new members, though you'd probably be surprised to know that we do have like ten new members join each week. Most never post though. Lots of reptiles folks, mostly. Too bad none of our regular members care enough to snap a few shots and help put a calendar together. I guess that saves me several hours of work though.
  12. I'm placing a link here in case people aren't seeing that we've announced a photo calendar contest: http://www.roachforu...t=0
  13. Welcome to the Rules section for the 2012 Allpet Roaches Forum Calendar Contest! We've done a calendar in the past and tested the waters a few times in recent years too, but we often receive a lukewarm response. That doesn't stop us from trying! So, look through all those photos you've taken, pick your best three and upload them to the submission thread soon! Rules You can only submit photos that you have taken. You allow the photo to be published in the calendar. Entrants and winners will not receive payment or commission of any sort. All entries (photos) must be first-time submissions to a Roachforum contest. You can submit a photo that you've posted on the forum previously, as long as it wasn't part of a previous contest on the forum. Each member is allowed three entries, so please choose carefully. No watermarks, text or writing on any photographs (advertising). All entries must be received by December 20th, 2011. Don't delay! After the photo submission period ends, winners will be decided by one or more rounds of poll-based member voting. (That means one vote per member! Member's attempting to cheat by creating duplicate accounts for themselves or friends will be banned from the forum.) Roachforum Admininstration reserves the right to change the rules at anytime during the contest, as needed. Image Submissions What kind of files can I upload? JPG, PSD, PNG What size should my image files be? JPG files can be up to 10 MB, but files over 7MB in size can cause your internet connection to time out. PNG files can be up to 4 MB. (Most submissions will not be neearly as large as the maximums listed above.) All images should be EXACTLY 2300 pixels (11.5 inches) wide by 1800 pixels (9 inches) long, and with a DPI above 150+. Photos which do not match these requirements may be disqualified. Please ask if you have questions about this. 16. A lot of people suppose that because something is rarely seen, the species is rare. This is usually not the case, but more an artifact of people not caring to look. I'm pretty certain that me and the handful of other people in the roach hobby are very curious about your secret collecting method, but unlikely to utilize that knowledge by driving down to make our fortunes on collecting and selling them. If these Arenivaga are anything like the species or two that I've had (as well as nearly all other roaches), there are billions of them under the sand there. Go get more! We're dying for the next update!
  17. I have found males in the Imperial Dunes on the surface beneath creosote bush. I think this thread marks a first in terms of somebody expressing concerns with over-collecting a cockroach! Do you have information on them having an at-risk population status?
  18. Sounds like you are off to a great start! Are you able to import them from Australia to Hong Kong, or did you pick them up from another breeder somewhere in the world?
  19. That sloth is really amazing and life-like. I'm getting a Lucanus elaphus on my arm this weekend.
  20. I use cichlid fish food pellets and all my roaches and many other bugs devour them. I don't have the same results with dog or cat food.
  21. Nice! What part of AZ did you find them in? I found males in both the Algodones Dunes (near Yuma) and Madera Canyon (45 minutes south of Tucson).
  22. When are they dying? Is it before or after their wings dry and darken? Tell us about the humidity in your cage. My adults seem pretty intolerant of dry conditions. I recently moved them into a new container with too much ventilation and 75% of my older adults died within a week (I didn't have that many). Were there any signs of the other roaches biting them while the freshly molting ones were still soft?
  23. Sorry for the late update. I actually posted a note about the downtime issue and the forum being back up, but I guess I posted it too soon (before the software had a chance to "settle", and it disappeared). Anyway, apologies for the downtime the past few weeks too. Roachforum was previously hiding in a subfolder of the mantidforum.net website. It is now on its own hosting package and won't be affected or slowed down by its sister forum. I'd like to make a quick mention of the American Cockroach Society Publication I just finished reading. Orin shipped the first-ever issue out last week. I was disappointed that the forum went down the same week Orin released the publication, but glad to see he's posted a topic about it in the Classifieds section now. Orin's contributions to the roach hobby go far beyond what he does on this forum and the new publication. I was very happy to give back by purchasing a copy, and very pleased to see forum members contributing articles, and not just "American" members!
  24. I shot a video on this a few months back. It really is neat how they do it:
