  1. When I came home today I was suprised to find that I FINALLY had some Deropeltis paulinoi hatch out. Hopefully the other egg cases will begin hatching also! I really love these guys- the halloween colors are great! Graham
  2. For feeder species you may use a more spacious cage. I LOVE the bucket caging for my small colonies of "pet"/collector species that I maintain.
  3. This past week I've finally had a few of my B. rothi culture begin to mature. So far I have 3 males and 1 female. All three males have FULL length wings. The female looks like all the pics I have seen of B. rothi- dark coloration, SHORT wings & light colored mark across the front. From everything I've seen, B. rothi males usually have about 2/3 body length wings.... has anyone ever heard of full length wings on B. rothi? Thanks in advance, Graham
  4. Yep, That Invertebrates Magazine article is great... answered alot of questions I had. Like everyone above, I avoid the eucalyptis leaves (I too have had some die for no apparent reasons while feeding them dried organic eucalyptis leaves). I now just add alot of dried oak leaves. I have a substrate close to Matt K's. Coco fibre, Sand, Rotten wood & leaves mixed... about 4" or so. They tunnel through it. Like Orin mentioned...the tunnels do collapse every now and then. I noticed that about 1/3rd of there tunnels collapsed last night... I was really hoping for babies this year...so far, no luck. Oh well- maybe next time. hope that heps- Graham PS: It seems that alot of people seperate out the mother & the babies from the rest of the group. I have heard rumors of adult males eating other roach species... I've never seen any HARD evidence...I've never tried it...they're pretty slow...I really don't see them "running down" another roach... but I figured it'd be worth mentioning...
  5. UPDATE 1/8/08: I was just going through my Ornate Velvet roach cage to see if any of the egg cases have hatched and noticed that one of the egg cases under the food dish was busted open (no roach nymphs in the cage)...there were a ton of both the Orange Isopods & Dwarf White isopods under the dish 9and all through the substrate)... There's no proof that it was them.... there were multiple other untouched egg cases within the cage... To be on the safe side I moved the Orante Velvet roaches to a new cage w/o isopods...moved the egg cases also to the new cage... I still have isopods in multiple cages... haven't noticed any problems...this just kinda caught me off guard today because I've been waiting on these egg cases to hatch for some time.
  6. Hey Roachsmith- search this fourm...there is a thread (or maybe a couple threads) already posted about these guys. You'll love them. Graham
  7. Depends on my work schedule. I'm gone for 2 weeks at a time...so, when I'm home I feed them well... every 3-4 days... and when I'm gone, they eat the dried food (ie. roach diet & cat food) in their dishes. All my cages have dried leaves and rotten wood in them... They all seem to be doing fine on this schedule.
  8. Thanks Orin...I have a small group coming from KuyZo next week... I'm excited about "big" isopods that will breed in captivity... If they breed anywhere close to as easy as the Spanish Orange Isopods and/or the Dwarf White Isopods, I'll have no troubles. I'm sure the regular setup of coco fibre/rotten wood & leaf mulch substrate a few inches deep with a covering of hardwood leaves and a few chuncks of rotten wood will work just fine for them. I wasn't sure if they needed to be kept drier or not, but from your abopve comments, I don't think so. Graham
  9. Hey everyone, I've heard a few people mention a large Canyon Isopod from Southern California (San Diego) that reaches almost 1". Anyone have any pics or links to pics? Any care hints/tips? Do they reproduce in captivity? Thanks in advance, Graham
  10. Thank you Orin. I also sent Matt K a group of them (I don't believe I sent any mature ones- sorry Matt...)... Hopefully Matt will be able to compare his cultures to the one that I have. Y'all are great... Thanks so much. Your friend, Graham
  11. Thanks Orin (thats the info I was looking for), I made three bucket cages yesterday and mixed up some substrate (coco fibre, rotten wood & oak leaves)... ready for three more species.. I believe the G. oblongata are a sure thing... I should hopefully be able to get some E. capucina... and STILL have one cage left (considering the Coasta Rican Zebras still).
  12. Ahh, yes Matt...it's the Ergaula capucina that I was thinking off... the adults have that light brown stripe accross them (right???)... I didn't know you had them...let me know when they are established.. Graham
  13. Nice Javier... I have a few pairs also...they are such a cool species... I really enjoy having them around. Great pics! Graham
  14. Yes, those are some that I really have been considering...I haven't seen them for sale though latly.... Graham PS: Thanks!
  15. Hey everyone... thanks for the replies. Your right Orin, Paratropes or Megaloblatta are still towards the top of my dream list. I haven't tried Panchlora sp. "giant"... and I've considered the Gyna species .... gives me some food for thought.. Thansk! Graham
  16. I was in the middle of a move last year on the Arachnocon weekend so I wasn't able to make it. I haven't kept up with the arachnoboards gossip lately BUt was wondering if anyone knows if they've decided where Arachnocon '08 is going to be? Hopefully San Antonio again... I should be able to make it this year (depending on work schedule). Cheers, Graham
  17. Well, since I ahven't posted in some time...and it seems kinda slow around here...I figured I could make some small talk... I have that hankerin' to get a new roach species for my collection but am stumped on which species. I will hopefully be getting G. oblongata in the next few weeks. I really want Panesthia sp. roaches but no one here in the US has them for sale (the few people that do have them aren't willing to part with them no matter how much I offer)... I'm not using any for feeders so I wanna stray away from many of those species... I've had most in the past (lobsters, green banana's, orangeheads, etc.). My current species list is: 1. Aeluropoda insignis 2. Blaberus craniifer Black Wing 3. Blaberus giganteus 4. Byrsotria rothi 5. Deropeltis paulinoi 6. Hemiblabera sp. 7. Lucihormetica subcincta 8. Lucihormetica verrucosa 9. Macropanesthia rhinoceros 10. Neostylopyga rhombifolia 11. Panesthia angustipennis spadica (Japan) 12. Polyphaga aegyptiaca 13. Polyphaga obscura (Turkmenistan) 14. Princisia vanderbeckie 15. Therea grangeani 16. Therea petiveriana Most of the colonies aren't eastblished yet although many should be within the next few months hopefully.... Maybe y'all can think of an oddball/rare species that I'm "missing out on"... I've been kicking around the idea of some of the Coasta Rican Zebras... I like "flashy" oddball species... I do kinda miss my African Bullet Roaches- last time I had them, my colony really established itself well... Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated. Graham
  18. UPDATE: So far everything seems fine. I've used both the Spanish orange isopods in a few cages and the dwarf white isopods in other cages. I took Orin's advice and didn't put them in any of the Polyphagid cages .... they sems to be helping somewhat with cleaning up extra food.
  19. AWESOME roaches..... the diversity amoungst roaches still amazes me... Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Graham
  20. UPDATE: Well it's been probably 4 plus months since I got the small group of Panesthia nymphs... They are in a 5 gal bucket cage with ~6" of rotten wood...they tend to be HARD to find when trying to check up on them. So far, they're still alive... I can't really notice any growth so far. I have taken your advice Orin and offer a kibble or so of dog/cat food whenever I go through the colonies... don't know if they are eating them or not... 6 small panesthia nymphs probably couldn't eat a full kibble in 6 months- lol... anyways... still hoping to have a colony of them one day... Graham
  21. Hey Orin, My males have the 1/2 size wings. When it warms up and I send you that Polyphaga sp. I promised, I'll throw in a few dozen of these guys for you to mess with if you'd like. Your friend, Graham PS: They look just like the picture that fourm member EffeCi posted here: http://www.bidabug.org/Forum/index.php?showtopic=1054
  22. Hey y'all- Sorry I haven't been around that much (life...work...etc.)... I have even MORE nymphs now...I mean hundreds. This species has done GREAT for me. Once the weather warms up I need to start "finding them new homes" lol. The colony eastblished itself rather quick.
  23. Sounds like a GREAT trip Matt...I love your photos... Things have been super busy around home so I haven't gotten to post as much as I've wanted too... hopefully next week. Can't wait to hear more about your adventure.. Your friend, Graham
  24. My male L. verrucosa is always out in the open... they do seem much more active... nice pic Matt!
  25. I'm suprised you haven't checked out James's site. He usually has them for sale. Here is a link to one of his pages which lists B. parabolicus: http://www.blaberus.com/FORMgallery2.htm Hope that helps. Graham
