What inverts would you want/want more of in the hobby?
Acro replied to Spread.Out.Paradise's topic in Other Invertebrates
I second Aquatic Inverts! I've been keeping aquatic animals (fish, turtles, amphibians, crayfish/shrimp, snails) for over 20 years. I find it odd that aquatic insects and aquatic arachnids have not really moved into the aquarium hobby. Land crabs and amphibious crabs. If breeding in captivity could be figured out, I'm sure more could be kept. Vampire crabs are amazing (and fairly easy to breed), and coconut crabs are out of this world! -

That thing is cool! -
Extremely cool! I know you were trying to compost with roaches, are you apart of that program?

That is so great! Thanks for the news!

Hisser mutations or just deformation?

Check this for a bunch of links: https://www.roachforum.com/topic/4404-male-elliptorhina-javanica-halloween-madagascar-hissing-roach-with-deformed-exoskeleton/#comment-26227 -
Porcellio scaber 'Orange' are one of my favorites! Another beautiful and easy orange is Porcellionides pruinosus 'Orange' . . . but my fave is still scaber!

You did get Peppereds from me about . . . 20 or 25 years ago I think. I've lost most (if not all) of the records from that far back. But back in the early days of roach keeping, there were a lot less hybrids than there are now. A lot less species being kept too. lol

I'd like to try Blatticomposting (and other types of composting) this year. Maybe use Ivoryhead roaches for Blatticomposting, I've read that they are the best.

Happy Halloween! I want October to last longer this year, I'm not ready to take down the decorations!

I remember seeing beetle stuff like that when I was in Japan, back in 2011! I've been aching to go back (and not just because of the beetle stores)! OH I miss Japan! Thanks for posting that Orin. And that's your daughter!?!? I feel like I've seen that kid grow up through the images in your books! What brought her to Japan? She may have said in the video, but I just skipped to the beetle part. Next time I'm in Japan, I'm bringing so much beetle/insect stuff back! What did you find most useful from the box she sent you? Here are some photos I took from my visit, some of it is like what she sent you. I remember selling some of the stuff I brought back, you got some of the Japanese beetle jellies from me, remember? The "Decayed Tree" were great for Stag Beetle larvae. I sold some and used a few. I wish I had more of them! This is one of the additives for substrate, it's commonly used.

Approved Common Names - American Cockroach Society
Acro replied to Allpet Roaches's topic in General Blattodea Discussions
We have: 63. Periplaneta americana = American Cockroach 64. Periplaneta americana ("white eye" strain) = White Eye American Cockroach Isn't there a Periplaneta americana "Black" strain? Common name could be: Black American Cockroach. I know there is the new Periplaneta americana "Venom" that could be added (and I think this strain was created via the black strain). This could simply be called Venom American Cockroach (or Venom Villain American Cockroach, for fun). -
Maybe this? https://www.carolina.com/browse/product-search-results?Ntt=leeches&Nr=OR(product.type%3AProduct)&tab=p&question=leeches&searchExecByFormSubmit=true Good Luck!

You are basically "composting" those unwanted cereals. I'd suggest reading these threads: https://www.roachforum.com/topic/8323-blatticomposting-noob-how’s-my-setup/?tab=comments#comment-48837 https://www.roachforum.com/topic/5780-looking-for-inspiratonsuggestions/?tab=comments#comment-31274 And be sure to see this one: https://www.roachforum.com/topic/9517-starting-with-blatticompostng/?tab=comments#comment-52056 Good Luck!

All those cereals should be fine. I've fed stuff like that to a variety of bugs (roaches included). Good Luck and "High Five" to you for trying not to waste stuff. ;)

*UPDATE* I'm on my 2nd generation of mealworms, that have been raised on mostly pure styrofoam, I say "mostly" because I would give small portions of other food every month or so, mainly for the meal beetles that started emerging. I did find that meal beetles will eat some styrofoam, but they don't survive well on it alone and I don't believe that they break it down or compost it, like the mealworms do. This next time around, I will remove pupa and meal beetles into another container. I plan to feed the meal beetles normal fare (fish food, fruits, and I will attempt at seeing if they will compost leftovers from foods that I eat) while feeding the mealworms only on styrofoam. I added about 100 more mealworms to the group (yesterday) to try and get 2 generations going at the same time. Last of all, these links were sent to me, and I will now share them with you. They are about SuperWorms composting styrofoam! https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/beetle-larvae-can-survive-on-polystyrene-alone-67251 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048969719352258 If you are using mealworms or superworms to compost styrofoam, post up your experience!

Free? Heh Heh! If I came across a good deal on the orange werneri, I might try it, but for now I'm focused on other isopods that I have better luck with.
-
Nope, never got them again so I couldn't check the seasonal differences. But that is a good theory! Thanks for checking in Orin!

I've only supplemented the adult beetles with fruit beetle jelly, but I think the meal beetle also eat styrofoam. I'm still testing this, but the mealworms seem to be living and pupating on just the styrofoam. Anyone (besides me) working with styrofoam and mealworms????
-
From what I've read, yes, they can. I've started raising some with only styrofoam . . . and they are still alive. I just mist with water every now and then. I think the beetles need other foods though, but I'm not totally sure yet. Check out these links on the scientific study of mealworms and styrofoam from Stanford University: https://news.stanford.edu/pr/2015/pr-worms-digest-plastics-092915.html https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2019-12/su-msc121819.php

Flexible, reusable, (nonflammable?) alternative to egg flats?
Acro replied to Mun's topic in Enclosures and Barriers
Hot glue will cover the edges. I've used it on screen before. Good Luck! -
Flexible, reusable, (nonflammable?) alternative to egg flats?
Acro replied to Mun's topic in Enclosures and Barriers
Window screen? They sell it made from metal or fiberglass. Fiberglass will be more flexible. -
Are you using Mealworms to compost styrofoam? I have a setup and I was wondering, do mealbeetles eat styrofoam too, or just the mealworms? Do you have any other tips on styrofoam composting with mealworms?
