  1. Its true also they make good feeders I use them for my arboreal tarantula slings just toss on in the web and done lol also good for small geckos.
  2. Sounds kinda fun or a general insect pet channel. I don't use chat servers myself I'm not very techy lol
  3. Yeah the nutritional information on dubia is what made them so popular which can make selling other feeder species difficult. I always try to get people to buy orange head over dubia but it doesn't happen often.
  4. Well people smuggling is different and if you have to ask how to commit a crime....you probably wont get away with it lol However people import things regularly, reptiles, tarantulas, fish, etc There is very little info out there on what agency's are required to work with and which one specifically has jurisdiction over insects. There's like no info out there other than usda and local fish and wildlife. Its frustrating you know *sigh* I once asked a texas parks and wildlife representative about the legalities of collecting inverts in state parks and he said theres no rules at all apart from asking permission from a park ranger onsite...that doesn't seem right since I know people claiming to be licensed collectors but oh well I'm gonna do it lol I'm gonna figure it out one day....
  5. But the discussion of legal ways of importing or simply trying to find out what species is or isn't legal to import is also shut down. How do you find out if you cant ask?
  6. I've seen this happen before apparently there's no open discussion of the importation process. Its a conspiracy to keep the big guys who already know about how to import on top so the little guys get left in the dark.
  7. If you really want to collect them you can take a small smooth container (think shot glass) put it into the substrate where the top of the container to is flush or slightly lower than the surface of the soil. This technique is called a pit fall trap. Just place something yummy in the container and the larvae/beetles will collect themselves.
  8. This list doesn't actually include dubia some times called orange spot roach the six spotted roach refers to e. distanti which is cool I wonder if it applies to all eublaberus species.
  9. If you look at at home depot or Walmart you can find water crystals in the garden center with a picture and instructions on how to use them in potted plants. They were not intended to provide water for fauna but its now commonly used for that purpose. I personally don't use them much but I keep it around as a back up for when I go out of town and stuff. I look forward to hearing if it helps hold in moisture in the bin.
  10. I think in the soil is where they were designed to go for potted plants so should be fine. I stoped using water crystals with my eublaberus spieces cause all they do is get it dirty they didn't seem to be actually drinking it. My lateralis ate the crystals....I figured that can't be healthy lol
  11. I actually saw nymphs yesterday. the main things I changed was to smaller humid enclosure and added fruit to their diet again. I noticed they don't like dog food but devour cheerios so that's a good revelation.
  12. I have also used mazuri rat block before and its effective it's really hard so best suited for larger roaches. It doesn't mold as fast as dog food does which really is my biggest complaint with dog food. Some adult spieces like more protein the ones prone to cannibalize and cat food is higher then dog food in protein.
  13. On the cricket farm I worked on they had their food made by a local mill that did chicken feed. It was basically the same with a few tweaks. At one point they scraped a bunch fearing dermestids and I have used it for my roaches for 2 years now.
  14. Well there's nothing special I do for them with the exception of giving them more protein then my other roaches. They are really easy.
  15. I feel gestation time would certainly be effected with a few losses but not sure on brood size. Never isolated them to test it. Probably won't be able to for awhile my schedule the way it is.
  16. Hi glad you joined us. Do you keep multiple kinds of hissers? I ask cause I was wondering if there is a significant tactile difference and if you had a preference. I have heard e. javanica has less sharp leg protrusions and widehorns have the sharpest legs.
  17. Both orange head and banana are good options the orange head breed fast and get big don't climb might end up with to many orange head I know I do lol banana green color produces a good feed responce the adults climb but are pretty slow and don't climb much in the day time. I think red runners are safe I use them as my main feeder. All roaches have pluses and minuses. I personally don't like how dubia breed slow and like to burrow lol
  18. I power feed some colonys to boost numbers at times and cool them other times. For instance when I run out of money for food I cool them. I worked on a cricket farm and can confirm that power feeding of crickets shortens life span. Cool raised crickets can live 6 months hot crickets mature and die in 1.5 months almost exactly 44 days. I only really power feed roaches when I get a new colony and want the numbers to grow fast and cool them before I'm ready to sell or trade from them. Also only do this with big hardy roaches smaller spieces can't handle it as well I have lost cultures trying that.
  19. I might need to get some isopods one day
  20. Thanks I hope they have more babies soon. These have been one of the trickier spieces I have kept when it comes to breeding. Probably cause it takes so long for them to gestate.
  21. Yeah she is a bit of an enigma certainly one of a kind.
  22. I have seen some with red in their pattern looking almost like death head. I will have to look under their wings to confirm they have calico pattern
  23. Yeah I'm pretty excited to see if it can be isolated and the strain perfected. Hopefully roaches can be line bred.
