  1. So a hosting company is a company that owns the server that all of the data/images/posts of this website is stored on. They typically charge in 2 ways the amount of traffic a site receives and storage on the physical server. Personally I think roachforum could model itself after arachnoboards they make decent money I heard they used to even run in real life conventions. I think running a free forum is very noble but its a service and we are accustomed to paying for our services. A good example is how arachnoboards charges to use the classifieds if you haven't posted any comments in x number of days. It forces people to engage in conversation or pay for the privilege of posting an ad. Just a thought although I will admit I only post one or two classifieds ads a year over there for that reason. I want to see this forum as big as the tarantula forums one day that would be great.
  2. I think as long as they receive a misting fairly frequently maybe 2 times a week minimum that should work.
  3. Red runners would work well collect their ootheca in a jar and then it's easier to feed them off once they hatch.
  4. I can confirm they are native to central texas normally around lakes rivers and come to lights at night. I havnt seen them in Austin but friends in Bastrop and other towns are them.
  5. Yeah I was more saying in the I don't keep them in my collection but I have seen them in person kinda way. I might keep that genus one day for their fast reproductive qualities but have to develop a highly escape proof rearing method. We are currently dealing with a Blattella germanica infestation and if I brought home a pest species my wife might kill me lol
  6. Periplaneta fuliginosa are kinda interesting to there are quite a few in my area.
  7. I think its looking for a mate I isolated my female peppered roaches and they displayed similar behavior. I tried to feed a male American roach to a centipede one time and it molted. The centipede ignored it and for 2 weeks it ran around with its wings curled up in a mating display.
  8. Absolutely to save money on heating your hisser and dubia you could put them together in the same tank and just get one heat mat. I suggest putting the heat mat on the back of the tank not the bottom. Of course I'm assuming you just have the one of each species if there are colonys the rules change some.
  9. Depends on how warm you keep it but I would guess 2-3 months...that's just a guess though
  10. That's impressive in a way do you live somewhere where it stays pretty cool? Heat is one of the main factors in growth for insects. That and availability of food so as long as theres constant food heat it should grow. They only other thing I can think of is if its in a bright room it may not come out to eat as often as if it were dark.
  11. I find these guys around town sometimes and normally they will all run back to holes in walls. I saw one hole in a cinder block wall with thousands packed tightly together their antenna moving like grass in the wind. If your looking to find some try the walls they put around dumpsters It wont take long to find them half the dumpsters in Austin have a colony near by.
  12. Ahh ok I think its likely not full grown yet the average adult size is 65mm
  13. I have found with most roach as soon as they reach adulthood they will mate sometimes within 30 minutes. It has to be a full grown adult it can be tricky to tell since hissers come in a variety of sizes.
  14. Ahh I kinda thought that might be it. I gave meager offerings of cheerios but I'm sure not enough. I think I will separate the ootheca for now just to make sure I get a second generation while I get all the isos out. Thanks Hisserdude!
  15. So I had my harlyquin roaches in a multi-species setup then saw an eaten ootheca so I separated them. Now they are on their own with a few isopods and it happened again. Are they eating their own ootheca or is it the isos? I stoped feeding dog food to most of my collection cause it molds to fast. Also they havnt got fruit in awhile just carrot. I have had them for awhile now and still no nymphs im glad they have been long lived. Any suggestions would be great.
  16. Red runners for sure even when completely ignored they do well. Some others are lobster, surinam, red head, and pallid. I fed from my pallids to early but they seem to be bouncing back well. I wish Surinam made for better feeders my first 2 trys with them they breed so fast they filled up their container and there were so many the colony collapsed I'm about to have to move them again. Its hard to tell how many there are when they are always buried. My Panchlora adults arnt very long lived I thought it was just me. Of course for large feeders orange head are great.....I like feeders
  17. Maybe try mushy banana and or bread. I watched a video about a woman who hunts roaches in India with nothing but a rag soaked in sugar water on the end of a stick that she places in the sewer. Of course pheromones likely stick to the sugar well.
  18. They ingest bioluminescent fungi that causes them to glow bugsincyberspace sells the fungi and some other places. I haven't seen or heard the results yet but it's promising.
  19. Ahh so maybe its a "famine food" where they leave it as a last resort. I tend to feed them once a week so it was a surprise that they weren't as egger as they normally are. I have checked in on them since then and it does look like the isopods are fewer in number but I thought it might have been cause its a bit drier in there. I sure hope they are eating them that would be great I have to many isopods.
  20. Your a real asset to the hobby congrats on becoming a rhinoceros cockroach
  21. I have discovered assassin's seem to ignore isopods I tried putting in a binch to feed them but after checking a few times later that night none were eating
  22. I used to keep these guys awhile back. Its hard to find ones that arent albino these days. Right now I only have one little community tank and if I got one again it would eat all my fish in a week. lol
  23. Lol When I go shopping with my wife I'm a pain I say don't buy those buy the one in the good containers. Basically all my inverts are in used food containers cause I'm cheap lol
  24. The key is to identify the genders before breeding age and divide them in that way before they get a chance to mate. In that way you can then selectively introduce the genders after they reach adulthood since its unclear as to how many times a female need to mate in her lifetime to produce multiple broods. Of course this helps if its a slower growing/breeding species.
  25. Selective breeding doesn't require hybrids for success. Selective breeding for traits can be fun I typically have groups for that purpose. In fact with my hybrid hissers that are only good as feeders every year and a half I take the 5 largest males and 10-15 largest females and sell/trade the rest. If asked locally for cheap pet hissers I typically sell males from this group. Most hybrids arnt intentional for instance the mixing of b crannifer, b fusca, b atrops. Just simple misidentification. I think non burrowing dubia would be nice but I don't think traits like that can be pinned down very easy. Good luck with it if you try it. I would be the first to buy them : p
