  1. I currently have a thriving culture of Cubaris sp. "Panda King" and was wondering if it would be beneficial for both species to throw some in with my Epilamprinae sp. "Kota Kinabalu"?
  2. Hi all, My domino roach colony is doing pretty well, but I keep finding legs missing on a lot of them, even adults. Are they munching on each other? How can I prevent this, I almost always have water and food in their cage.
  3. Dear colleagues: My name is Daniel Patón and I am a professor of Ecology at the University of Extremadura (Spain). I teach two subjects Environmental Biotechnology and Experimental Techniques in Ecology. My specialization is the analysis of environmental data. I am interested in invertebrate composites such as isopods, worms, mealworms, soldier flies and of course cockroaches. We touch on these topics in my classes, but I have a lot to learn. I can bring knowledge of applied statistics and interdisciplinary training. 1. Do you currently raise any roaches? I currently care for three species of cockroaches: Eublaberus spp. "ivory", Aeluropoda insignis and Blaptica dubia. My main interest is the degradation of waste for composting. 2. If so, how many? I have several terrariums with hundreds of animals. I also have soldier flies (Hermetia illucens), mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) and two species of worms (Dendrobaena veneta and Eisenia fetida). I dedicate them to research and practical classes with my Environmental Biotechnology students. 3. Do you culture roaches as pets or feeders? I am mainly interested in degrading waste and generating compost 4. If feeders, what kinds? I'm interested in finding the species that degrades the most, doesn't require a lot of temperature, doesn't fly, is easy to handle and is not invasive. Some of these concepts are contradictory, but I'm still looking. So far Eublaberus and Aleuropoda are winning. 5. Are there any specific roach questions that you would like to ask the community? Yes, I would like to know which species would be suitable to set up a waste degradation centre in a place where the winter temperature does not usually go below 32 F (0ºC) zero degrees outside and reaches 113 F (45ºC) in summer. I suppose that in well-insulated buildings it would not be very expensive to heat. I am interested in the fact that the species is not invasive, although I understand that those that escape would die in winter. 6. How did you find our community? Asking experts like Kyle Kandilian, they told me about this excellent forum. It's not easy to find in searches, at least from Europe it didn't come up. I think it is a perfect forum, very well structured, clear and simple. 4. long time, no post! anyway, today i heard that roaches wont eat cucumbers which has been a little surprising to me. ive had four hissers in the past, making a grand total of six g.portentosa roaches under my care. i also had some dubia roaches 'gifted' to me with the best intentions which turned into a colony i had for several months until i had to sell the entire colony. not the most experience by far (although im hoping to keep working towards more advanced husbandry with more 'difficult' roaches over time) but i wouldve never thought they didnt like cucumbers since all mine ate them. since mine are pets, i like to feed them whatever is being used in my own cooking/snacking. its fun for me to personify them and sitting on my bed eating 3/4 of an apple while the boys lose their minds over the 1/4 piece i gave them just makes me feel really happy. the roaches get a 'big' fresh food item and i occassionally throw in some of the 'good' scraps before i toss the rest out back if its something they usually like. i eat a ton of cucumbers and they always get at least a little piece. my other four hissers werent really crazy about them but as all my fellow roach enthusiasts know, they will eat them anyway lol. the dubia colony complex or almost completely devoured everything i put in there. my two hissers ive had since october, velveteen and corduroy, are obsessed at this point. i put down an orange slice and a cucumber slice, they fight over who is standing in the cucumber. i went away for a four day trip leaving them a cucumber slice before i left, and when i got back it was completely gone from the little plastic cup. my brother, who was supposed to mist them and check the heating pad, of course didnt so he swears he didnt take it out. these two definitely eat more than any of my others did (if you dont count the dube's colony as a whole) is it just the skins? when i was searching around everything kept mentioning skins as an american/german roach repellent but i cant tell if they are referring to exclusively the skins or not. is it like oranges where theyll eat up to the peel and then stop? (i peel the cucumbers anyway bc i like the skin lol) clearly all my roaches are/were fine with them so its not really going to stop me but it was really interesting!
  5. Good morning everyone. 😛 I've decided to start up a photo thread on my cockroach collection in its entirety here after finally learning how to easily share pictures thanks to the one and only, @Hisserdude. I'll go ahead and get things rolling with the current crowning jewel of my collection, my smallish nymph pair of Rhinoceros Roaches, Macropanesthia rhinoceros. 6. Hello recently I got some plastic shelves but my bins won't fit, I want to know if you guys can give me a specific brand of shelves I can use, my bins are 18 inches tall so what I need is spacing between shelves to be between 18 and 20 inches, I got 4 bins being used an 1 empty so a 4 tier shelf unit would do but a 5 would be alright too, It's been years that I have my bins side to side in different places but I need the space to put new furniture the stacking would solve the problems I know some people buy wood and build their own shelves but I don't have the tools or knowledge to build something like that I want something that can be bought with easy assembly I'd prefer plastic over steel but I'm open to all suggestions as long as It's not building the shelves from scratch I'll leave the links of the bins if you guys want to know the exact measurements https://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-19481004-Titanium-Latches-45-Gallon/dp/B002C4KYFS/ and https://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-Gal-Stacker-Tote-Stadium/dp/B077ZFDC6X/ Mine do not have wheels btw
  7. Hey guys, new to the forum but have been keeping a Dubia Colony over the past year to feed our Bearded Dragons. Last year I scoured the internet for information on how to care for them and what type of enclosure to house them in. It's worked out pretty well so I recently made a video of the build process and uploaded it to YouTube. Let me know if you have any questions, or suggestions for modifications if I make more in the future. Thanks
  8. What is an inexpensive, lightweight method to insulate roaches during shipping in winter? I want to avoid using a heat pad, as I heard they are heavy and sometimes will cause the box to overheat. Any suggestions?
  9. Hello Guys! I'm proud to present to you, the first post in my new Photo series!!! I hope you all enjoy this titanic post, which is stuffed with nearly 150 pics of my roaches!!! Here it is: https://allaboutarthropods.blogspot.com/2016/11/photos-my-roaches.html Enjoy!!!
  10. so, our female had her babies on April 14th, 2015. When should we expect their first molt? We have them on moist eco earth and they are near a heating pad but not directly on it so their temp is about 75F degrees . Ive heard people say that we lose about half of them between now and adulthood. These being our first batch of offspring i really don't want to lose any of the babies :c we've started calling them the 'grandbugs'. gotta love babies!
  11. So, we have three adult Madagascar hissers, one is a little female that we are like 80% sure is a hybrid. We just became the proud grandbug grandparents of 61 little roaches, who just had their first molt. pretty little things! I'm becoming more interested in some really pretty colored wide horns? i hear they have some pretty coloration and get bigger? is that true? This picture has me just fascinated. http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/Roaches/images/GportentosaMale.jpg
  12. Hey guys, My name is Jae and im interested in raising Question Marks. My friend owns a small pets store where he only sells animals he has bred and raised himself, or his friends have bred and raised. My boyfriend used to work for the Bronx zoo and used to care for Madagascar back home before he moved here (Atlanta Ga) so for Valentines Day i purchased him a pair of Madi's from my friend Taylor from the shop. Im pretty smitten with them so far, but they aren't mine, they are Nate's pets. And my friend Taylor's wife Serah said she would be interested in having some Question Marks at their store if i could manage to breed them successfully. I understand they breed fairly slowly and are hard to care for, but i'm enthusiastic about it all and would like to know more about them in preparation of their arrival. I'm curious on how to pick healthy QM's and how to tell the males from the females. Cage set up, humidity requirements, diet etc. I look forward to your responces!
