  1. oh yeah I forgot to mention the water crystals.. I keep a constant supply of those around as well. BlapticaDubia sells them pretty cheap as well. I like the idea of rolling in honey and making pellets rather than a ground method because they can be messy.. I may try that.. I agree I like a mix of both plant materials and some animal fats as well.. I've given them small amounts of turkey and dressing baby food which they tear through..
  2. i posted this awhile back.. and it has worked amazingly.. I love my Dubia and have been hunting and reading around for the best all around feeder for them and found that there really isn't one! I've read everything from people throwing in items not fit for human consumption to totally organic fruits and veggies.. Knowing that they need high protein diet (different from many species of roach) I started my search. Ferret food was mentioned a lot so I looked around and found, Pretty Pets ,"Natural Gold" - it's 50% crude protein, then I went through dog and cat foods from soup to nuts and found, All natural - Good Life Recipe Catfood at 34% crude protein, and finally add Cody's ProGutload (progeckos.com) I've used it for over a year for my mealies and crix as gut load. It's great and has 20% crude protein and a ton of everything else they need; plus they already love it by itself... Each of these are loaded with vitamins and minerals but I add a bit of Vionate (all around multi vitamin and mineral) and blend the whole mix for ease in scooping and even distribution of each ingredient. Of course I still throw in some romaine, orange slices, or bananas once or twice a week. But this seems to be great mix and costs around 30 bucks and yields enough for at least 6 months. I also bought my Dubia from BlapticaDubia.com - he sells a roach buffet that works pretty well also.. but since I'm feeding them to my leopard geckos who may become breeders and are for sale, i wanted something I knew would bulk them up well and was easy to get on my own and cheaper.. I ground mine up in the magic bullet so it's like a course sand consistency and keep it in an airtight container.. You really can find all that you need in a petsmart, petco, etc..
  3. i get phorid flies with my crickets, which is just one reason I switched to roaches.. with the high mortality rate of crix they were always around feeding on the carcuses.. Leaving the lid off for a bit usually helped. fly paper and a natural repellent wax for flying insects that you can get at the big chain hardware stores took care of the problem.. good luck.. they are annoying
  4. very nice.. thanks for the idea.. I've actually seen someone do that with fruit trays rather than egg trays and still use the rods, nuts, and bolts setup. There are a ton of ways to do it but that looks great.. I may give it a shot one of these days too.
  5. I didn't really think so either, especially if you want the colony to sustain iteslf; the breeders need to be able to replace the losses until I'm basically up to my eyeballs in these guys. Once I hit a point that there too many for one enclosure I can take a good amount out and then place them into another container and start a second small colony. Then feed off each one in an alternating fashion. Plus what's going to happen when the adults have offspring? Am I going to be scooping out babes and placing them in the other setup constantly? I guess I answered my own question but your thoughts area always appreciated.. Thanks
  6. I have around 200 nymphs of varying sizes and around 20 adult breeding pairs. From what I've read its a 50/50 toss up on weather the adults should be separated from the non-breeding age roaches. What do you guys think? These are Blaptica Dubias by the way.. thanks ahead of time !

  8. Aren't Dubia apart of the Blaberus Species? Blaptica Dubia??
  9. Blaptica Dubia are our favorites currently. They are hardy, non-climbers, no scent, slow, and breed at a good rate but not excessively fast. They are also awesome feeders for our Leopard, Gargoyle, and Crested Geckos. I've grown so attached to them I feel bad feeding them to my gang sometimes..
  10. Hi Everyone, I've been looking for a roach forum for a couple of weeks since starting a colony of Dubia. I've bred crickets; which has led me to a vast hatred for the miserable vermin. I also am breeding mealworms currently and plan on getting into hissers most likely soon. I've owned and bred Leopard Geckos for 4 years and have ventured into Gargoyles and Crested recently. I've found that the Dubia make the ultimate choice when breeding geckos. I've used crix and mealies for a long time and found after introducing Dubias; not a single one refused. I'm also fascinated by the little guys and even feel bad when I have to serve them as prey. I haven't been taking a lot out of my colony yet because I want them to get established. I can't wait to learn more and meet you all! thanks Mj
