Hey guys.

I just received my first Madagascar hissing cockroaches in the mail today. Its snowy and below freezing and I honestly thought they were dead but after holding them they started moving. The female is missing most of one leg and all of a sudden took off with gusto and hit the floor....she acts fine but I'm concerned....do you guys think she got injured? I can see a but of a small gap in places on her abdomen and can see a bit of white through them....I don't know if she was like that before as I had literally benn holding her just a few minutes. The male is much more chill but hisses like crazy. Will the cold have lasting effects on them? Any way to know if the female has babies inside her? Best way to heat without drying them out? I have a duo dome. Its been a few hrs now an they are at about 75 and hiding. Can they eat cat food that I can't totally make into dust? I need a hammer for this stuff lol. Thanks!

Your female should be fine, they always have that sort of white gap on their sides. As long as they look healthy they should be fine, just let them warm up a bit. These guys like it drier than most roaches so don't worry too much about keeping them moist. I never grind up the cat/dog food I give my roaches at all, they eat it just fine. I imagine a powder would be quite messy.

Sounds like your hissers will be fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Once they warm up and realize there's food they'll be happy. You don't have to do anything special to warm them up. Just keep them at room temp or a little warmer (I don't know how warm your house is) and they'll heat up over time, which is probably better for them than suddenly exposing them to high temps.
