Much needed vacation!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

Been gone for weeks and this is what's keeping me busy.

Where was I, you ask?

Mini-herping, trekking and skinny-dipping atop a mountain stream in the southern region of the Philippines! :P

Enjoy!

My cam had a smudgy lens at this point so the photos are a bit cloudy lol

Wow! Beautiful pictures. Do you know what the tall plant in the right corner of the 4th picture is? I've seen it in the woods behind my house but I don't know what it is. It must be an invasive species if it is in both North Carolina and the Philippines.

OK...... why do you swim in water with snakes and other poisonous animals? I would think there are dangerous things in Philippines is that right? :P

You might be thinking about sumac in our area, but I have no idea what that plant is that is in the Philippines.

Ok, that looks just like the plants I see around my house. It must be a staghorn sumac. Thanks!

No idea as well but it does resemble the cultivated Averrhoa bilimbi tree. Speaking of sumac, i think i brushed against some asian poison ivy here hahaha!

Awesome millipede you found there. Looks like the "fire legged" (or whatever) that I sometimes see for sale online.

Yep, flame-legged millipedes alright. This one was about 6" long

On the contrary to what i originally thought as well. There were no leeches, no creeping venomous snakes or man-eating mammals though there were some monkeys and wild boards lol

Does not that species just live in the western parts of North Carolina where it is mountainous? So you live in the mountains? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhus_typhina

Interesting. In Papua New Guinea there are land leeches and they fall from the trees to get to you.

I live very close to the mountain region. I have a rock quarry (or what used to be a rock quarry) across from my house, and I find those plants there all the time. I read online that they are a pest plant and highly invasive, but there actually quite pretty when they turn all red.
