Identifying wood?

Recommended Posts

When you go to a wooded area to collect bark/logs/branches, do you just collect from the ground or take it off the tree, or what do you do? If you pick it up from the ground how do you know is something suitable for roaches? I've read pine and other softwoods are not suitable, so I'm wondering how do you make sure you pick the right thing and not something harmful.

Ultimate Guide to Breeding Beetles: hardwood logs have branches that are sporadic and often at 45 degree angles; pine branches grow in concentric perpendicular rings

Good luck!
