Escape proof lid??

Recommended Posts

Im new to roaches and this forum. I’m going to be getting Madagascar hissing cockroach’s in the next couple of weeks, and I’ve never owned roaches as pets before. I have a ten gallon tank that I’m planning on using at a habitat, that I took the black rims off of. I really like the rimless look and Im hoping to find/build a lid that will keep that look. I was thinking of buying some mesh and Velcro that I could use to attach on the top, but I’m wondering just how strong hissing cockroaches are? Would they be able to push the Velcro apart? I’d also love if you guys have any ideas that I could maybe use that keep the rimless look of the tank. Thanks!

Try food grade silicone. You'll need a tall layer, I would say at least 4" inches from the top down, but it does a great job of foiling their escape attempts. You have to re-up it every once in awhile. Personally, though, I'd go with a lid. I keep mine in 10 gallons with the metal screen lids. I add a layer of foam weather stripping to the underside where it sits on the top of the tank. That keeps even the smallest nymphs in.
