Matttoadman
Stupid auto correct Blattella not boat tells wow, So at my recertification classes today one fellow ran some slides of wild German mutants that are being maintained at Virginia techs genetic stock center. Their website won't load but a found an article discussing one of the many strains, called the prowing http://www.bioone.org/doi/pdf/10.2108/zsj.14.339. Black bodies with red eyes, bubble wings(blood filled wings that will refill the roaches body if smashed)
Hisserdude
Sounds very cool, I would actually consider letting some of those into my house, in an airtight, escape proof enclosure of course! Unfortunately the link does not work for me, it says: The requested article is not currently available on this site.
happy1892
The german roaches infested in our house has adult females with bubble like wings, and they tend to be dark colored. I thought it was the roach poisons to treat them that made them mutants ...
Matttoadman
Happy igr's (insect growth regulators) cause their wings to crinkle. hisser dude, go to google and search. Hisserdude
It's official, I want some of the Prowing german roaches! They have wings on their pronotums, which look like ears!
Salmonsaladsandwich
Wasn't there once some kind of prehistoric flying insect that had an extra pair of wing- like projections on it's thorax? It's name eludes me right now, it looks sort of like a mayfly.
Salmonsaladsandwich
Paleodictyopterids. That's what they're called. Considering that they have 'dictyopterid' in their name, I wonder how closely related they are to cockroaches? Maybe that's what this mutation is expressing, sort of like how chickens still have the genes for teeth.
wcbpolish
As a lethal gene, with a proportion of the eggs in an an ootheca dead (33% and 64%, per the Fig 5 description) leads to embryos being trapped in the mutant x mutant... Which means that you'd have to keep "wild type" with your Pro-wings... which means you'd have wild-type Germans around... recipe for disaster?
