  1. ahh well it sounds like it is possible then! They seem to have similar requirements for housing so should be ok. If all goes well in the school with both roaches living together i may pinch a few for myself!
  2. ahh sounds good! Do you think there is a certain number of roaches that should be the maximum for that tank? there are 6 hissers in there- 2 adult the rest are sub adults, so would 6 deaths head roaches be an ok number to add? then it can grow from there? I said that i will take some if they breed and have too many so it can be controlled easy enough. Its the first time they will have animals in a class room at that school- i want it to go well for them haha roaches having a war wouldnt look good i dont think!
  3. Hey all! I recently took two of my hissers into the local primary school and spoke about them to the kids as part of their bug week (basically they are taught about insects and all that for a week) and they liked them so much they have asked for some for a class display. I have quite a few now thanks to them breeding so that was no problem. But they asked me one thing i was not sure about-- they asked if they could keep two different species toether. It turns out that one of the teachers neighbours has a colony of deaths head roaches and are willing to give some to the school-but the school will only allow one vivarium. So what do you think? are hissers and deaths heads compatable? the viv they have is <--->30inch across, ^v 12inch deep and from front to back is 12inch. Theres lots of climbing places and dark spots and has wood chip substrate like what i use for the hissers. would they kill each other or would they get a long? personally id think against the idea, but would be good to hear others opinions. if they could be raised together it would look pretty good i think! Any help welcome!
  4. hey, The larger roach is still doing the upside down running thing, the nymph, well im pretty sure its dead. Im thinking about maybe putting the other down-let me know if you think this is a good idea. I have checked and the rest of the colony is fine. I have never given them any banana- they only have the same fish food, romain lettuce, iceburg lettuce and carrot and apple every so often as a treat. I also have water crystals in there but its from the same batch ive being using since i got them. All of the fruit and veg is cleaned before i give them it and the temperature is what has been reccomended by people on here and care sheets. I still have no idea what has caused this, just hope it doesnt happen to any others
  5. oh and I have now found a little nymph acting weird- was walking around like it was drunk and falling over during the day- ive taken that one out as well. Both roaches that i have removed have no grip at all when walking. The rest seem to be ok but Im going to keep watching for anything out of the ordinary. Could there be some sort of illness they have gotten from something?

  7. hi, I got up this morning to find one of my hissers on its back, looking like it was running and trying to right itself. So i opened the viv and nudged it, but she carried on doing it. I then picked her up with no fuss at all (normally this one darts away) and she carried on doing it. I have never seen anything like it and cant find any information on it so i have been watching closely and noting what happens in as much detail incase she dies or whatever so everyone knows for next time. Ive took her out of the viv and have been watching and looking closely. She seems to be vomiting clear liquid, and is really twisting her body. Sometimes she makes a C shape and others she is twisting her abdomen one way and her upper end the other. her hisses are, well they are not hisses- they are sort of like little squeeks, like little burst of air escaping and sounding wet. Ive never heard anything like it before. her antennea are hardly moving and when she stops "running" she sometimes waved one leg occasionally and continues making the squeeks every few seconds. Please help
  8. Hi, thanks for replying! I am still pretty new to this so im still learning! I have been keeping them around 73-76 degs as on some sites it said that they will be fine and not breed at this temp (I was looking to have a few at first then maybe expand when more experienced). However they have been breeding- i have plenty of nymphs roaming (didnt see the birth unfortunantly)-they all seem to be fine and ive seen another roach with her ootheca a few days ago-so i guess that hasnt worked out well! haha Oh well, I look forward to having a few more! I am using a heat mat and thermostat at the mo (with a substrate); its on one end of the tank so there is a gradient and i have a large peice of cork bark that goes all the way down the back of the tank so they can move up and down and not come out in the open if they dont want to & other hiding/climbing places, i have the food on the cooler end so it doesnt spoil as fast-as cat food stinks and they are in my room! They eat all the veg i give them; theres always a crowd at the dish, but meat-its like offering a veal at a vegan resteraunt! Il raise up the temps and see what happens- will they become more active? they are pretty active now but will be even better if they roam a bit more. If anyone has more suggestions do tell!
  9. hey, I was going to buy some fish food for my hissers today, but after getting to the shops they had tropical fish flakes and goldfish fish flakes, can either be used or is one better than the other? The tropical one is: http://www.britishcornershop.co.uk/product.asp?id=10905 The goldfish one is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003UF6JK2/ref=asc_df_B003UF6JK22954807?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B003UF6JK2 Does anyone else use this brand? Ive being using cat biscuits and cat wet food along with fruit veg and bread etc but they dont seem to touch the cat foods- I just want to make sure they are getting all the nutrients they need! The same happened with dog food as well. My brother also has some strawberry flavour whey protein, would that be ok to try as well occasionally? Thanks!
  10. Cool, thanks guys. I now have the hissers, they seem happy enough exploring the viv I have made for them so all is good! For some reason they all keep crowding around the thermometer though.....
  11. Apologies if this has been asked before but I just need clarification if possible as I keep hearing different things; my question is- Do hissing cockroaches need misting? I've read that they don't and like it dry, but then I have read they like it really humid....I don't know what to do! I know that it may depend on the environment, if it helps I'm in the north of England. Will the water gel crystals and veg I will provide give enough moisture or is misting required? Oh by the way, I should say hi! This is my first post and Im new to keeping roaches- on wednesday i will be getting my first bunch of Hissing Cockroaches Also I wasn't sure where to post this..here or the health forum. Thanks a lot and thanks for the interesting reading on the site.
