Zephyr
I noticed that milliseconds before my B. giganteus and death's head's defense smells hit me, I hear a hiss, and sometimes a series of hisses, before hand. Is this them pumping out the smell? If not, how exactly do they get the smell out into the air so fast?
crittergu
I've noticed the anal area will open a few seconds before I can smell the defense smell(mm dubias and orangeheads). It is a different smell than how their enclosures smell though. Whatever smell a dubia colony gives off seems to be from their shed skins/dry droppings. Keith
My Giganteus do the same thing, i've always thought the air that makes the hissing sound has an odor. Guess if you like hissing roaches hissers arent the only ones that you can buy now that do that.
Bricktop
I've noticed this with nearly all my roaches, but especially my blaberus sp. and of course, eurycotis floridana. The smell they release is unforgettable, but the sound is also loud. The Hissers are only slightly louder than giganteus i'd say.
