jared
Hey, so my female javans dropped two ooths this week. Could it be residual stress from an ant infestation or the SoCal heatwave? I feed them dogfood, fish flakes, pond sticks, oranges, carrots, apples, and plenty of oak leaves. I only have 2 toilet paper rolls and 3 pieces of bark laid horizontal and two vertical. Could it be lack of good cover? The males have also been doing a lot of territorial fighting, should I move all but the victorious alpha to a separate enclosure? EDIT: My females matured before I got the males 2 months back; is it possible they've been holding unfertilized eggs and are only now building new ones? One ooth was minuscule but the other one that was just dropped was pretty sizeable.
UncommonRoachBoy
Could be various reasons for both dropping. Your setup sounds fine as long as humidity is kept rather low. Im also in SoCal and mine are breeding fine. They're temps throughout the day avg about 85 during the day to high 70's at night. Seems to me like a case of infertile ooths. jared
I had a creeping suspicion that it was the three males that were constantly fighting so I put one in a separate cage and that helped, but I had to put him back because I'm on vacation. Hoping my females pop while I'm away. Question, do you use a heat source? I've had multiple heating setups but at this time of year I don't feel as though I need one. UncommonRoachBoy
whats your male to female ratio? unless you have them in a super small container, I don't see over-crowding as the culprit for the ooths. If your females matured before the males, a "sizable" ooth wouldn't be seen unless is was infertile. best of luck breeding.
jared
6 females to 3 males in a pretty sizeable container. (8 gallon). The first ooth was very small, so guessing infertile, and the other I had seen her airing and was pretty big but uneven for some reason? She dropped it and devoured it. They've put on a lot of weight and size since then so I think I was just being impatient heh. The fights between the two males are extremely loud and obnoxious, I constantly hear scuttling and clamoring in there and they drive the females from their comfortable resting spots. One of the males also lost all of his antennae, so I'm guessing they're just more aggressive than most species.
UncommonRoachBoy
Ive had loud fighting before, the genales are used to it and you have nothing to worry about. The ooth could have been crooked because she fell maybe? Also if she ate it, she may have aborted it on purpose so that she could eat it. Could be lacking some nutrients in their diet. Up your protein. Maybe try fish flakes and some dog food bits
jared
That's possible, although it was more bent in the middle if that makes sense. Like, misaligned sloppily (the second to last row jutted out whereas the last and third-to-last row were in line. So yeah, idk! Are ooths supposed to be uniform in all instances? Also I feed them dog food, fish flakes, and pond sticks dusted with chunks of cuttlefish bone in addition to the fresh fruit, veggies, and grains. I'd be surprised if it was a nutrient deficiency. UncommonRoachBoy
Ooths become bent often, when females push them out to warm them or rotate them, other roaches may bump it and misalign it. Ive had bent ooths hatch out though so thats also not a reason for the drop. I really think the ooths were just duds and the females were prepping to hold fertilized ooths. jared
Two new litters in my Javanica tank, they were definitely making room. Thanks for the help.
