  1. Sorry, just noticed the new post...wasn't trying to ignore you. I've had my E. javanica for about a week now, and I would very much like to exchange information. I put mine on coco fiber mixed with oak leaves and rotten wood. Temp in the room fluctuates from 70F-80F. I spray the enclosure heavily and then wait a few days for it to dry out. Fish flakes have been the staple diet as of late, but fruits and veggies are offered too. My pictures suck; you really don't want to see them.
  2. I should have my javanicas in a day or so, and it's all your fault!
  3. I think those are next on my list.
  4. I also remember Kafka making a few a errors on cockroach morphology, but he was a flawed writer—not a cockroach enthusiast. I may have to find my old copy and reread.
  5. Had to read it for a German lit class. Enjoyed it. Found myself sympathizing with Gregor. However, it does seem to perpetuate the belief that roaches are the most vile of creatures, and we all know that the only the opposite is true.
  6. They look like Surinam roaches (Pycnoscelus surinamensis).
  7. I'd pick a larger species and fry it to a crisp so it's nice and crunchy. 'Limbing' might be necessary also. Yes, I've thought about this. To win a bet, I once ate a dead one off a dog kennel floor. When in Thailand, I saw them cooked and in their natural, animated state but did not partake. Looking back on it, I probably should have because I don't think I could have gotten any sicker than I did.

Cool! I'll have to build up my trading stock first. Currently, I only have Chinese Mantis nymphs to trade with.

I'm in Calera (Central AL). How about you? Hmmm...I may have just found a trading partner/supplier. Nice collection you have going on there!
  10. I've been hearing what I believe to be stridulation from my small G. lurida colony. At first, I thought that the noise may just be from the nearby crickets; however, they're all nymphs. After this last feeding, I'm now certain the noise has been emanating from the pile of oak leaves in the roach bin. I'm also certain that nothing but G.lurida reside within those leaves. The sound is not high like that of a cricket chirp; it is more of a low groan, and it is not all that repetitous. Please forgive me if this is common knowledge, but when I kept this species before, I don't remember hearing it. Can anyone confirm this observation? Thanks in advance!

Long time non-poster here(lurker ). My name is Joe, and I live in AL. I have kept roaches off and on—as time permitted—for years. Currently keeping a small colony of G. lurida. I've already learned a lot from this forum and would like to take a more active role. Thanks!
